Konnichiwa from Japan!
We’ve spent the last few days exploring the gorgeous temples of Kyoto and are excited to round out our trip in Tokyo.
You can expect some more awesome Japan content in the issues ahead, but first let’s get to today’s news:
Hyatt Devaluation
Chase Ink Bonus Ending Soon
Hotel Tip
1. Hyatt Devaluation
Category 8 is getting quite crowded as Hyatt plans to update its hotel categorizations for 372 properties (18% of their portfolio) on March 28th. This update impacts not only hotel categories but also how many points are required for free night redemptions. You can expect point requirements to increase at 58 properties, so if you’re planning to stay at a Hyatt property over the next 12 months, we suggest booking before the updates take effect to spare those extra points. Even with the increases, we still feel that Hyatt redemptions are more valuable than competitors like Marriott, Hilton & IHG. Lastly, the partnership for 1:1 transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards is reason enough to consider Hyatt for your next journey.
2. Chase Ink Business Cash & Unlimited Offer Expiring
Two Chase Ink card offers are expiring on Tuesday March 21st at 9am. In order to take advantage of these amazing offers, I would highly recommend signing up for either of the two cards immediately. This will give you time to sort out any reconsideration calls without missing the deadline.
The offer is to earn $900 cash back (or 90,000 points*) after $6,000 in qualified spend over the first 3 months. Not too long ago, these same cards were offering $750 (or 75,000 points) after $7,500 in qualified spend, so you can see why this offer is outstanding.
*Note that if you have another Chase Ultimate Rewards card you can combine these points to be used for travel instead of redeeming as cash back.
Chase Ink Business Cash® Credit Card
No annual fee
Earn 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year.
Earn 2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year.
Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases, with no limit on how much you can earn
Chase Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card
No annual fee
Earn unlimited 1.5% Cash Back rewards on every purchase
My preference here is the Ink Cash since 5% back is quite rare and office supply stores like Staples and Office Depot carry gift cards for many services that I consistently use for my businesses. For instance, Uber, Hotels.com & Airbnb.

3. Hotel Tip
You can’t take advantage of what you don’t know about. This couldn’t be more true for hotels, especially larger properties with countless nooks and crannies to explore. During our recent stay at the Hyatt Regency in Osaka, we happened to ask the front desk what amenities were available, and were pleased to learn about a sprawling 24-hour gym and sauna, “social room” complete with a premium coffee machine and cookies, concierge which helped us book last-minute dinner reservations, and a free shuttle into the city center.
These features are rarely broadly advertised but can have a truly transformative impact on your stay, so it never hurts to ask the front desk about any hotel features or benefits at your disposal.
