New to credit card points & miles? Start with the mini-course!
Good morning,
After a much needed break, this week’s Top 3 is extra spicy:
Cathay Pacific, First Class for 2
Singapore Airlines, 30% off Saver Tickets
Coconut Grove, Miami - 5x more value from Marriott Bonvoy
Cathay Pacific First Class for 2
Cathy Pacific First Class is Top 5 on my personal “First Class Bucket List.” Besides being rated the best “bed” in the sky, Cathay Pacific has transfer partnerships with Amex, Bilt, Citi & Capital One, making it more achievable to accrue the necessary amount of points.
The hard part is availability, but we’ve got you covered:
Hong Kong to Los Angeles
110,000 points (one way)
May 31 or June 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, 19, 20
Some routes have availability for two people
For those planning a trip to Asia this Summer, this may be the ultimate treat to wrap up with. Given proximity to Japan and South Korea, it’s well worth paying out of pocket for a positioning flight to HKG if you can find avails and choose to redeem your points this way.
Singapore Airlines, 30% off Saver Tickets
Singapore Airlines Spontaneous Escapes is back for March, meaning Saver Award flights are 30% fewer miles to book.
A few sweet spots to check out:
Premium economy from NY or SF to Singapore
Economy from NY or LA to Singapore
International business class (Singapore to/from Frankfurt)
Coconut Grove, Miami - Points Recap
Two weeks ago we spent 5 nights at the Courtyard Marriott in Coconut Grove, here’s a breakdown of costs:
82,000 points (Marriott & Hilton offer “5th night free” when redeeming points)
16,400 points/night (cash rate was roughly $380/night)
Value of 2.3 cents per point (much higher than typical 0.7 cents)
$25/night amenity fee (includes 2 drinks, water, bike rentals) — uncommon for a Courtyard to charge this
Utilized 5 Suite Nights to upgrade to the 1 bedroom suite shown above, taking the value to ~3.5 cents per point
That’s 5x the Marriott Bonvoy average point value
The location is spectacular. Besides being a 10 minute walk from the heart of Coconut Grove, it’s just across the street from the water and a 3 min walk from a hangout spot for a local family of manatees.
We love it there and will likely go back to this hotel, but if you’re set on the party scenes of South Beach or Wynwood, this is likely too far from the action you’re craving.
All that said, very happy with this redemption and worth considering Marriott Bonvoy as a source for outsized value if you’re willing to shop around for deals and redeem 5 nights at a time.
