New to credit card points & miles? Start with the mini-course!
Good morning,
We are just about a week away from our trip to Japan! This trip has been in the works since June 2020, and after multiple postponements, it’s finally happening. 🥳
We’ll have plenty of Japan content to share over the next few weeks, so let’s focus elsewhere for now:
1:1 Card Consult Sessions
Hyatt Bonus Journeys Promotion
Domestic AA Flights via British Airways Avios
1:1 Card Consult Sessions
What is it?
A 15-25 min meeting with yours truly to talk through your current credit card stack and see there are better uses and hidden benefits of your current cards that you aren’t maximizing as well as talk through what may be missing from your stack based on your preferences.
Why is it worth it?
In one meeting this may reframe how you go about spending on your cards. With a tiny bit of conscious effort you can be earning many multiples more of points on everyday purchases and more quickly achieve your travel and/or cash back goals.
How do I book?
Click here to book a time.
Any prep needed?
Yes, please share which cards you currently use and whether you prefer to optimize for flights, hotels or cash back.
Talk soon,
Armand

Hyatt has become my favorite hotel chain due to the ease and affordability of transferring points on 1:1 basis from Chase. Hyatt offers credit cards (as referenced above) but know that if you have any Chase card that allows for transferring miles, you’re eligible to transfer directly to Hyatt.
A few Chase cards that come to mind with transfer capabilities are the Sapphire cards mentioned in Lesson 3/3:
💳 Credit Card Reviews | Chase Sapphire Cards
To wrap our mini-series I wanted to end where it all began for me, and that’s with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (CSR) card. Since its launch back in August 2016, it has been the crown jewel in the Chase portfolio of cards. Let’s do a comparison of the Reserve with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card, to see if either is right for you.
BENEFIT (my estimate value of the benefit) ( = requires enrollment)*
Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $900 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
$300 Travel statement credit ($300)
Priority Pass Select lounge access ($100)*
$100 for Global Entry, TSA Precheck or NEXUS every 4 years ($25)*
$10 GoPuff credit (delivered monthly) ($120)
DoorDash Dash Pass ($100)*
Instacart+ 12 month membership ($120)*
BENEFIT (my estimate value of the benefit) ( = requires enrollment)*
Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
$50 Hotel statement credit (must book your hotel through the Chase portal)
$10 GoPuff credit (delivered monthly) ($120)
DoorDash Dash Pass ($100)*
Instacart+ 6 month membership ($60)*
Before learning more, remember that in yesterday’s Rules of the Game, Chase only allows you to hold either the Reserve or the Preferred at any given moment. Additionally, you only qualify for either Chase Sapphire welcome bonus once every 48 months. Lastly, Chase has a strict 5/24 rule, meaning you can only open a Chase personal card if you haven’t opened 5+ new cards in the past 24 months (note that if you’re added as an authorized user that will likely count towards this total).
If you’re more interested in a Business Card, you can also consider:
Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
Earn 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points after you spend $15,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
Chase Ink Preferred earns the exact same Chase Ultimate Rewards points as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve. It comes with a 100,000 point bonus, the highest of all the UR cards. Ink Preferred is a business card, but you don’t need to own a “traditional business” to qualify for the card.
Domestic AA Flights via British Airways Avios
Domestic flights have been top of mind for us lately, since our trip down to the Bay Area in January, Miami a few weeks back, and my upcoming travel to Denver. Prices can be out of control and flexibility we experienced is all but gone.
That led us to look into ways we can utilize points towards domestic availability and while this is a work in progress, my favorite transfer partner for ease of booking and consistent availability has been Avios.
With Avios you can book on both American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which is a big unlock since those two airlines are historically quite difficult to earn miles towards.
Further, booking with Avios is often a better deal than the standard mileage awards chart, as shown by TPG here:
To get started, simply create a British Airways Avios mileage account and link it to your American Express, Capital One and/or Chase account(s) to to transfer miles.
As a reminder the Transfer Partner Cheat Sheet is in Lesson 1.
Before you transfer miles, be sure to check availability by logging into to the Avios Awards Booking site here. This page isn’t the easiest to find, so I would recommend bookmarking it for future reference.
